Second Grade News

                                                    August 8, 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to second grade!  We have 15 students this year.  Alicia will not be returning since she moved to Washington D.C. but a boy named Jaden Coles will be joining our class.  Welcome Jaden!  We will also have a student teacher named Katrina Schneider from September 15 to November 14.  For those of you whose children have never experienced a student teacher, she will be watching and learning from me, then gradually teaching a few classes at a time.  For the last few weeks she will teach everything under my supervision.  It will be like having two teachers, or double the fun!

I will be visiting all of you at home very soon to talk about second grade, but I will write a few highlights down right now because I know how easy it is to forget things.

Registration forms are available online at stpaulsonalaska.org. They are due on August 15.  If you have trouble downloading or printing forms some are available in the school office.  Call Mrs. Peters at 783-2552.

School Supplies are listed in the forms.  Second grade is the year when both a hymnal and a Bible need to be purchased.  The school will order that for you so look for those items under "Additional Fees" on the Statement of Receipt.  I know it's kind of a big investment all at once but these books should last all through grade 8.

Daily Routine  Each day your child will carry back and forth from school 2 folders: Christlight and a Home Folder.  Please check the Home Folder each night (there will be homework!) and send any notes etc. to school in the Home Folder.

Notes  On Monday of each week I send home a note for the week which includes all the homework and memory work assignments for the week, the spelling words to study, and any other important news.  It will be just like this note, only shorter.  It is also available online at the address on the bottom of this page.

What are we going to learn?

In Christlight we will be studying the New Testament and learning about Jesus' life on earth.

In Math we will be reviewing addition and subtraction, learning some multiplication, and LOADS of other stuff.

We have a new Reading series, which has Language and Spelling included right in the series.  The reading book will come home on most Tuesday and Thursday nights, so you can listen to your child read.

In Handwriting we will start learning cursive about the end of October.

In Science we hatch butterflies in the fall and chickens in the spring.

In Social Studies we learn about our community and our country.

I would like to let you know that I really emphasize reading and writing in 2nd grade.  My philosophy is that you get to be a good reader (writer) by reading (writing.)  In addition to the reading book, we have a reading workshop and a writing workshop where the children work individually or in small groups at their own level.  I am happy to have such a small class because I can give plenty of individual time to all of the children.  I vary the groups all of the time.  Mrs. Mueller is available to help me, and I send random groups or individuals to her.  Everyone gets to see Mrs. Mueller at some point or another.  Second grade is often a time when reading and writing skills not only blossom but explode!  It is a lot of fun to watch them grow.

And finally, let's enjoy this year together and keep the lines of communication open.  Please call me either at school or at home with any concerns or questions.
